the speech of garden design

On last Monday, Dec.1 2008, we went to the third floor of library and listened a speech. The topic was Ancient Garden Design. The speaker was Zhao Bin, he is a famous garden-designer of China.

At the beginning, professor Zhao Bin told us what the garden is. He said: Garden is a forest that formed by stones, plants and water on an open ground. Following the rules of science and arts, create a place that people can relax and play in it.

The old Chinese word that means garden is like the picture on the top. The different parts of this word presents different meaning.

The main topic was the garden design of Su Zhou. Su Zhou is China's famous historical and cultural city. Su Zhou Gardens are famous all of the world. There has nearly 200 large and small gardens. Mr.Zhao said, there are 4 kinds of Chinese gardens are royal gardens, personal gardens, temple gardens and famous scenery gardens. In Su Zhou, most of gardens are royal and personal. For example, Zhuo Zheng Garden is a royal garden, and Liu Garden is a personal garden. In many gardens, there are many artists' artworks. In old ages, poets written poems about gardens and painters painted pictures of gardens were very common.

A garden that I paid attention is Zhuo Zheng Garden. It is one of the most famous garden in China. It made on 1509 AD, the Ming dynasty. One of the designers was called Wen ZhengMing, a excellent artist in old China.Area is divided into eastern, central and western parts. Anythings are poetic. Everywhere is like nature itself.

There were 2 special points of garden designs:
First, separate the water and incise stones in the garden. The meaning is get water and stones in the design together, and make them looks more natural.
The second is the garden need remotely and quietly.

As professor Zhao Bin said, garden design is a huge and difficult arts.Mr.Zhao had many knowledges want to tell us, but because the time was late, we only listened a part of the speech.

I like this speech, because I want to be a designer in the future and I love design. This speech told me what the garden design is, how to design and the main idea about garden design. Through this speech, I know garden design is interesting but deep, and we have a new thought about design.
